Though the extreme right in Russia differs from its counterparts in other countries because of Russia’s history, it targets exactly the same “enemies”. In its eyes, everything and everyone classified as non-Russian or non-Aryan is fit only to be marginalised or wiped
out. The extreme right works out whom its enemies are according to their skin colour, sexual orientation or simply “being or looking different”. According to the SOVA Center, rightwing extremists killed 72 people in 2007 just because their victims did not fit their twisted view of the world. At least 573 people were injured in racist attacks during the first eleven months of 2007, the majority of the victims being black people and people with dark skin. Foreign students, and people from the Caucasus especially, are routinely attacked but young people from different subcultures are also victims. In some cases, organised racist violence against Caucasian market traders takes place but the police persist in denying the political motivation of the attackers. Though the statistics so far do not specify attacks on homeless people, it has to be assumed that they, too, are frequent targets for violence.
